My l00 and 6 month old father could not remain in his own home without a caregiver.   After advertising privately for four years and hiring five caregivers my expectations with regard to care for my dad were not met.

Jiang, Xueyan (Echo) arrived at our home in North Saanich on January 15, and at the time I must say I was very happy to receive some assistance with my wife, who, in the past, had had a series of small strokes.  My wife was unable to drive, prepare meals, clean the house or even to exercise adequately without my assistance.  Echo was needed.

Now, our situation has changed radically.

From the time Echo arrived she formed a strong bond with my wife and was able to provide friendship that was very helpful in our household.  There is no doubt in my mind of that, as Echo took over many of the household activities that Ruth had previously carried out.  Both Ruth and I were very busy in the community at large prior to her strokes.  Echo was considerate and was able to provide meals that were appropriate for the two of us.  She maintained the house appropriately and looked after our dog, although he brought in much clutter in his long shaggy hair.  She became his friend and was followed from room to room as she carried out her work. We have always laughed a lot in our house and Echo has a great sense of humour that has encouraged that to continue.

About a month ago, Ruth fell and broke her hip and Echo spent many days with her in the hospital as she underwent surgery, and then recuperation.  Echo watched, assisted in her treatment and applied what she learned when Ruth returned home after a two week stay.  Since then Echo has assisted in Ruth's recovery and now has her walking, standing up from her chair, and climbing the few stairs we have.  Ruth's rapid improvement is no doubt the result of those exercise walks in February and March when Echo insisted that Ruth walk every day.

I am very impressed with the strength of character and positive attitude that Echo brought to our household.  Having her join us was a good decision.

Last year my wife of 76 years passed away suddenly in April 2008. I found it very difficult to look after our house as well as cook meals and clean house, in fact it was too much for me.
