Financial Assistance Options for Elderly Care
There are many available financial assistance options for elderly care. We can help you determine if you are eligible for any government funded financial support. These programs are designed to help people afford the necessary caregiver they need to live independently in their own homes.
Choice in Supports for Independent Living (CSIL)
This program is only available in British Columbia and is suitable for those who have a significant physical disability and desire more control and flexibility in managing their home support services.
If you have a physical disability and high-intensity care needs
If you have assessed needs that can be met within CSIL, within available resources
If you have agreed to pay the assessed client rate
If you can safely coordinate and manage CSIL services or have a client support group or a CSIL representative acting as a CSIL employer
Disability Tax Credit
A sum based on the amount spent on disability related expenses to be deducted from the total amount a taxpayer owes, granted as a subsidy.
You must have an impairment that is prolonged, which means it has lasted or is expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months.
Your impairment in physical or mental functions must be severe and it must restrict substantially all of the time (at least 90% of the time).
A qualified practitioner must certify your severe and prolonged impairment
Attendant-care or care in an establishment claimed as medical expenses
You can claim the amounts paid for attendant care expenses as medical expenses or as a disability supports deduction.
You can claim as medical expenses costs for attendant care that include your share of the salaries and wages paid to all employees in an establishment (other than full-time care in a nursing home) performing the following duties:
- Food preparation
- Housekeeping services for a resident’s personal living space
- Laundry services for a resident’s personal items
- Health care (registered nurse, practical nurse, certified health care aide, personal support worker)
- Activities (social programmer)
- Salon services (hairdresser, manicurist, pedicurist) if included in the monthly fee
- Transportation (driver); and security for a secured unit
Veterans Independence Program
The Veterans Independence Program (VIP) helps you remain independent and self-sufficient in your home and your community. Depending on your circumstances and health needs you may qualify for financial assistance to obtain services such as grounds maintenance; housekeeping; personal care; access to nutrition; health and support services provided by a health professional.
If you have qualified for a disability benefit.
If you have qualified for the War Veterans Allowance.
If you are in receipt of Prisoner of War Compensation.
If you are a Veteran who is eligible for, but is unable to access, a Contract Bed (also known as a Priority Access Bed).
If you have been the primary caregiver for an eligible Veteran or civilian.
If you are a low-income or disabled survivor of an eligible Veteran or civilian.
